Entertainment, Sports and Media Lawyers

Sinclair Black was founded in 1989 by Mick Sinclair and has evolved to become one of the leading specialist entertainment law/media law practices in New Zealand.

We represent film and television producers, line producers, cast and crew, directors, writers, agents and distributors, and have close associations with industry Guilds, the Producers Association and State and private funders. In the music industry, we advise both major and independent record labels and publishers, aggregators, tour promoters, band managers and agents. We are well established in literary publishing, representing both international and local publishers, as well as writers and illustrators.   As these various industries converge, we have expanded into digital media applications, including representing gaming companies, website developers and software producers.

Our law firm also acts for a number of "creatives" within the entertainment and media field generally, including journalists, literary and magazine publishers and writers, advertising agencies, composers and musicians, event and tour promoters, sports organisations and athletes.  Mick Sinclair has pursued an active involvement in the Arts by being on the Boards of the New Zealand Comedy Festival, The Going West Literary Festival and previously Black Grace Dance Company and the Moving Image Centre.

We believe in developing long-term relationships with our clients and aim to provide high quality services at a cost that only a small specialist firm in the field of media and entertainment can deliver. We have also built up associations with leading entertainment law firms in the UK, the USA and Australia, which can be useful for New Zealand clients doing business in those regions.
